KDT Summer Intensive 2022

Welcome! ALL STUDENTS (CURRENT AND NEW) MUST REGISTER HERE and PAY TUITION HERE by August 15. **All enrollments submitted August 16 – 21 will be subject to a $15 late fee, and enrollments submitted August 22 or after will not be accepted.**

If you are passionate about Kathak dance and motivated to pursue intensive training, this set of continuous Monday through Thursday classes is for you. The core curriculum will include technique and repertory dance taught from India by Guru Saswati Sen (of Kalashram) and in-person by KDT Master Teacher Guru Rita Mustaphi. Dive into Kathak technique, have fun, learn discipline and grace, improve your technique and be challenged!

This session will have a hybrid set-up, with all in-person students required to provide proof of vaccination and wear a mask while in-studio. If you have not already done so, please read our student code of conduct and sign the waiver located here. Please note that all participants must have at least two years of prior Kathak training to join. Students new to KDT are welcome if they have the requisite experience! We’ll ask you to describe your training when you register.

Guru Saswati Sen is a disciple of the late Pandit Birju Maharaj and helps continue his creative legacy at Kalashram, the famed school of Kathak dance in New Delhi. She received her initial training at Delhi’s Kathak Kendra under the guidance of Smt. Reba Vidyarthi. After receiving the National Scholarship in performing arts and graduating to become the prime disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj, she has become a leading dancer, choreographer and teacher in the world of Kathak. She’s known for her strong abhinya (expression of emotions), technique and lyrical grace onstage.

Guru Rita Mustaphi is the Founder and Artistic Director of Katha Dance Theatre. Born & raised in Kolkata, India, she graduated from the University of Calcutta with a major in physiology and Rabindra Bharati University with a major in dance. Later, she became a disciple of Pandit Vijai Shankar and finally studied under the tutelage of Pandit Birju Maharaj, the legendary master of Kathak dance. After moving to Minnesota in 1977, she founded KDT with the goal of making Kathak relevant and accessible across lines of generation, culture, and community. Over three decades, she has built a reputation as an innovative, risk-taking artist; introduced Kathak to a worldwide audience and garnered countless awards for her choreography and leadership.
