KATHAK – The Storytellers
Katha Dance Theatre is pleased and incredibly honored to be sponsoring a public performance by Kathak master and senior-most disciple of the late Pandit Birju Maharaj, guru Saswati Sen. KATHAK – The Storytellers is taking place at Hopkins High School on June 29!
Starting at 7:30 pm, Ms. Sen will begin the show with a solo Kathak performance with live musical accompaniment by Dr. Praful Kelkar, Swaranjali Kale and Abhinav Sharma. The second half will feature Maitreyee Pahari and the company dancers from the Delhi-based Lok Chhanda performing SUFIANA – A World of Spiritual Love, a mixture of Kathak dance and Sufi poetry. SUFIANA will feature a company of 10 dance performers.
This one-night-only show presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of Indian classical dance’s greatest living performers. Ms. Saswati Sen, an internationally acclaimed Kathak dancer, is the embodiment of the Lucknow Gharana’s grace and power and an exemplar of her guru Pandit Birju Maharaj’s creativity! She tirelessly worked to plan his various tours while performing and teaching as an assistant in workshops throughout the world, and as guru, continues to preserve and honor his legacy.
